Non-duality is something that the mind itself cannot get aware of it, as it can only be known through the state of being in it. Everything that we are looking to know cannot be known by naming it and or knowing it but it can only be understood.
If you are looking for enlightenment and non-duality or Advaita it cannot simply be obtained by separating it out and experiencing it. The act of looking for Advaita, or the act of seeking to understand non-duality is attaining non-duality itself. It is itself what your mind is seeking to have. However the mind only functions when it is separated, where it is hard wired to know, to know, to name and also to understand. This makes it very useful and also very powerful too.
Once you start meditating, you might also get the urge to eat something while meditating, if not this you will start feeling itches, if not this you shall move around a lot, if not this you might also get distracted from the thoughts of something else. At times you might also consider meditation as a failure as you did not get the same feel while meditating as you got yesterday and it might distract you from your meditation.
You can also consider writing as examples, creative writers write very often, however what you get to rid is something which is authorless. Individual not fighting to have the separate self, also when they have no ego guiding them in the process of writing, the best work is done, without much effort.
However when you find out the reasons behind the thoughts and when it becomes clear to you, you do find out the real reasons behind the separation, the action of creating yourself to be someone against everything else. This something is what has to be protected, which needs to control everything so that it can survive.
At a certain level if you are able to find a method to surrender this conscious of yours which is separate from the moment, which has brought you in this conflict with this moment, at the end everything that shall be left with you will be the non-duality in the moment. Once you undergo through this feel you are going to become more aware of the situation. When you become a student to non-duality there can be no existence of stress. If you have successfully endeavoured oneness then no conflict can exist.
Another great example for non-duality can be the breathing itself, breathing is something that we can control, like we can hold our breath, inhale faster and deeper and so on. However you don't stop breathing when you don't take control of it, it happens naturally. Similarly, we think that life has to be controlled and to attain non-duality; however the existence itself is non-dual. You must remember that life continues even when you are controlling it or not.
Moreover it might look that you are in control of your life and eventually find out that you cannot control your life.
