Kitchens are spaces in buildings, that is, commercial or residential buildings where preparation and cooking of food occurs. A cold store with complete inbuilt refrigeration system for food preservation is found in commercial facilities such as hotels. The place has to be organized. This enhances efficiency when working. Dirt and germs should be prevented by having the refrigerator cleaned on a daily basis.

Kitchens are supposed to have cooker worktops, cabinets which are all inbuilt. Some other appliances such as ovens and microwaves should also be inbuilt to create more space. Each plays their role effectively since for kitchens to operate well, the work flow must be good too. For one to avoid outbreak of infections, they should keep their kitchens ever clean. Those in commercial settings are inspected by public health officers to ensure they are safe for human use.

The industrial period brought a lot of changes to the cooking spaces. The appliances quality and efficiency was increased. There came about new materials such as aluminum and steel. New worktop materials such as granite and marble were introduced. This made the cooking process smooth and quicker. It also easier to clean this surfaces and they last longer.

This was accompanied by the introduction of open plan kitchens. This were integrated in to living spaces. They were introduced during the modern era of architecture that embraced the open plan system. This was to ensure free and flowing of spaces. This also ensured maximization of the interior spaces.

Nowadays, they are still in use. This is because they give a good experience to the user. They have very attractive look. Kitchen space must be able to accommodate movement of people and have space for keeping furniture. They sometimes combine with the dinning space. In that case, the island may be used as a dining table and the same time as the worktop.
