Conveying Effective Thought Leadership Illinois Industry Colleagues Listen To And Respect

By Walter Robinson

Every few years certain fads or catch phrases seem to come to life in the corporate world and threaten to take over common sense and credibility. If you are going to inspire the workforce in your area of expertise, you will have to come prepared to face skepticism and resistance from managers and long time employees. Communicating effective and persuasive thought leadership Illinois industry managers get excited about is not always easy.

It is not feasible to believe you can convince others to follow you until you have established a solid, proven, and respected background. You will have to point to your own successes before advising experienced executives. Having a willingness to learn, to admit what you don't know, and to have a passion for ideas, combined with hard work and dedication, is a good beginning.

Introducing yourself to current industry leaders, finding a mentor you admire, and soaking up as much information as possible is a good way to start. You should not be shy about picking the brain of someone well known and respected in your field. You can find out how they started and what they did to get themselves noticed. You should take advantage of opportunities to speak to small groups and work in select groups with industry executives.

You should never try to be all things to everybody. You need to find out what you are good at and most passionate about and learn everything you can about select subjects. Focusing your attention on a few topics will engage and keep your audience much better than touching on a wide variety of subjects. Publishing articles on specific topics is a great way to establish credentials.

There are always people who think they have learned everything there is to know about a topic. You should never be one of them. Staying open and enthusiastic about other people's ideas, will help you maintain your passion for your field. If you use someone else's ideas, you must acknowledge them. Too many people take credit for things that don't belong to them.

Inspiring others and getting them excited about the possibilities for future development should be your goal. If you are pressing a personal agenda, your audience will know it. This may work for in the short term, but if you want to become a lasting figure of respect and leadership, you should have higher goals.

Once you begin to get noticed and respected, you will begin to feel confidant enough to suggest more and more creative solutions for corporate issues. Success feeds on itself. You should remember never to get overconfident about yourself and never close your mind to new ideas.

Not everyone is a born leader. That should not stop you from following your passions and learning how to express them to others. You may have to work harder, practice more, and spend more time with mentors, but you can succeed. Sometimes those with fewer natural skills but more determination, become the best leaders.
