Dangers Related To Cryogenic Gases

By Stephen Hamilton

There are gases which are well-known to have the abilities to be stored in liquefied states. Most of them are known as Cryogenic Gases and include oxygen, helium, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and argon. They are known to be useful but to some extents are harmful in case precautions are not considered. The main reason why they are liquefied is to ensure that they can be easily stored. The following are dangers one can experience in relation to them.

Helium, nitrogen, and argon are dangerous once they get released into the atmosphere. They are known to produce local oxygen-deficient atmospheres. This has a likelihood of generating asphyxia when inhaled which can even lead to death if much of it gets in the respiratory systems. That is the reason care need to be taken and to ensure that it does not leak nor spill by all means.

On the other hand, there is carbon dioxide which is another gas which has the same effect as the ones discussed above. But, the effects related to carbon dioxide are lesser toxic as compared to that of inert gases. Also, it is important to note that it has greater effects on the atmosphere when in large quantities. It leads to global warming through what is called greenhouse effect.

Oxygen is another gas which has great significance to the well-being of all living organism. It assists in respiration, and that is why people are encouraged to ensure that their environments are clean. On the other hand, when in excess, it has the abilities to increase the rates of combustion. Hence, they enhance burning of everything including those that do not easily burn on open air.

To some extents, oxygen is stored in liquefied state. This is made possible through the help of nitrogen and helium which get cold enough to enhance its condensation. Therefore, there is a need for one to ensure that the vessel containing the condensed gaseous material is not placed near combustible things. It can facilitate a severe explosion.

When one gets into contact with cold surfaces, there are chances of having cold-burns and frostbite. Also, extremely low temperatures can lead to hypothermia or asthma. For that reason, it is essential for an individual to be in protective clothing which includes cryogenic gloves and goggles. This will help to reduce the risks of getting into contact with the cryogenic liquids which might have side effects on your body health.

The individuals and systems which deal with the gases need to be designed in such a way that only adequate pressures will be used in vessels containing them. There ought to have relief measure like valves which will ensure that just the required amount of gas will be stored in the containers. Additionally, the individuals involved in putting the gaseous materials in vessels must ensure that they are adequately sealed.

In conclusion, one should understand all the risks which are related to these gases to know how best to handle them. Any mishandling may lead to deaths which would have been avoided by taking cautions as expected. For that reason, everybody ought to be careful and adhere to the protective measure advised at all times.
