Considerations To Make When Starting A Georgia Pecan Farm

By Diane McDonald

Pecan nut farming can be a lucrative long term investment that one can venture in. However, the success of such an orchard depends on the kind of decisions that the aspiring farmer makes. One should rely on someone with experience in such type of farming and maintain patience to make the best out of such an investment. Here are a few aspects about how to establish a Georgia pecan farm that one can ponder on.

Confirm the best weather for the plant. You cannot succeed in farming pecans if you are not in the right weather zones. The best weather zone should have a maximum of twenty around fifty-five degree and lows of twenty-nine. The area should also have a mild climate which can allow extended seasons.

Consider the cost of starting the farm. The value of launching such an orchard depends on the size of land you intend to cultivate and the number of trees one wants to plant. Look for a former farm budget that you can rely on to determine the average amount that you need for the whole process. Large scale farmers prefer employing a professional farm manager to handle the budgeting process.

Decide whether to use cultivators. Cultivators are plants that can withstand a farm that has scabs or not. You can either pick an intolerant plant or a tolerant one. Those located in high-humid areas should consider using intolerant ones since there are high possibilities of getting scabs. Some of the varieties include the western, Caddo and the Apalachee.

Check the number of trees that you will plant in a particular space. Traditionally, farmers tended to plant these tree at about three to eight trees in every acre. However, such periods have passed on due to the high values of land. Therefore, modern farmers have adopted a high-density spacing method which allows a maximum of forty-nine trees at each acre.

Determine the right planting method. There are a variety of planting methods that one can adopt. The most common means include planting grafted but bare-root plants, grafted but potted and rootstocks that need grafting. Either way, it is ideal to get the trees from a nursery when they are one year old and above for easier management.

Learn about the nutrition needed by the plant. Young trees require food and water. One should focus on food and water after planting this type of tree. The essential nutrient necessary for root growth is phosphate. It helps the young plant to develop root hairs which become feeder roots eventually. You need an in-depth analysis of the soil to determine the best nutrients that suit them.

Check the pest and diseases control measures to consider. You might face common pests such as stinkbug, codding moth and coconut bug in your orchard. Look for the right spraying products that can eliminate these pests. Apart from that, you need to regularly prune the trees to a reasonable height that is ideal for spraying. You should as well spray the anti-scab product during the humid season.
