For many people, there is a fascination about paranormal events and sightings. The Virginia City ghost town claims to be one of the most haunted towns in the country. There are sightings and sounds which the promoters bring out to support their claim to ghostliness. For a price, visitors can be taken to locations where they have the opportunity to hear sounds which may be otherworldly in nature. There is also lodging where visitors can spend the night and listen for ghostly sounds. While ghost hunting is not for everyone, stories of the rich history of the ghost town can be entertaining. Here are some of the ghosts which have names and the locations where they are believed to have been sighted over the years.
The Storey County Courthouse - This building was one of several which burned in the Great Fire. The building was reconstructed in 1876. The ghost of a man who hanged himself behind the courthouse has been seen, Peter Larkin is another figure associated with an untimely death. His mistress lied to try to save him, but later recanted thanks to the haunting by her dead husband
St. Mary Louise Hospital was built in 1864 and is now known as the St. Mary's Art Center. Visitors claim to have seen a man in a wheelchair in one of the room. There is another tale of a man who perished in a fire in the hospital and a nurse perished in the blaze during an attempt to save him.
Silver Terrace Cemetery - Halloween features heightened interest in the burial ground set on the side of a hill. There are hundreds of graves here with many headstones. As would be expected, mining accidents claimed many lives. Sightings related to spirits at the cemetery include a young girl seen wandering along the headstones, and a headstone glowing at times. Blue lights floating throughout the area have also been seen.
John Piper - The owner of historic Piper's Opera House has been reported at the window on the second story, as well as in the box seats. Other reports are of a woman who floats across the balcony. The building has been rebuilt two times and is still operating today.
The Mackay Mansion - No less than seven apparitions have made an appearance in this structure. An Asian man with long hair, believed to have died in the fire has been seen there and another tall shadowy figure has been seen in the gazebo. A young girl known as Elizabeth appeared to Johnny Depp while he was staying in the mansion. Other ghostly residents of this mansion include a man who smokes on the balcony or the parlor and a woman who wanders the carriage house, dining area and first floor.
Rosie and William - Rosie was a prostitute who leaves the scent of her perfume in Room 4 of Gold Hill Hotel and William, a former owner, smokes a cigar in Room 5. He can be felt sitting on the edge of a bed. A little girl is believed to haunt the third floor.
Lena - This prostitute frequents the Washoe Gentleman's Club. She has been seen wearing a blue dress and climbing the spiral staircase leading to the second floor. Several deaths occurred in an explosion and a man committed suicide in one of the third floor rooms in the 1990s.
