A prepaid card is a card that serves as an alternative to carrying liquid cash. The prepaid card owes its development to the desire for people to carry less cash around or control their spending. Since there is a limit on the monetary value placed on the card, it enables people save more money than they would have saved, if they had physical cash on them or used a debit card.

A payroll card is a type of prepaid card you get from your employer, with which you receive your paychecks on. A few college ID are also prepaid cards, because some colleges offer a close loop card, which can only be used to pay for things on campus. Other schools may offer open loop cards which you can use to pay at any retail outlet that accepts that network brand.

A major advantage of having a prepaid card is that it is a viable alternative to having raw cash on you. It works perfectly for those who may want to keep their purses a little neater, or are too busy to go to the bank to withdraw cash.
