There are levels to human society. At the very top, there are the very rich, those who can travel to a different country without a care in the world. Then there are those in the middle, who can travel, but have to think about it first. Those at the bottom, on the other hand, will likely stay where they are. There are subtleties to it of course, and travelling is not the only thing that is restricted to them. There are lots of things, like food security and basic comfort. But they still need to the time, so they end having to go to community service, where they will make up for what they did.
Opportunities to volunteer will be easy to find on most days, but during certain holidays, when everyone feels some level of humanitarian obligation, they will be harder to come by. Still, the internet is something that exists in the modern world. So it can be used to find such opportunities with ease.
Animals needs help. They are generally aware of their surroundings. They also have feelings, and more than capable of love. But they do not always get to give that love away. Instead, they end up at a shelter.
But so does the environment. While it is true that climate change is not going to be reversed by a few people picking up some trash on the side of the road, it can at least help sanitize the community at large. Not to mention that planting trees does have a positive effect on air quality.
Finally, there are people. When life screws someone over, it can be hard for someone to feel like a human being. They live on the streets, dive through trash to find a morsel to eat, and then sleep in gutters. Living like that can make one feel animalistic, less than human. But a volunteer, a human face giving them a warm smile and then letting them know that they are in fact still people, that not everyone in the world has completely forgotten about them, can be a huge benefit to their sense of worth.
