Useful Information Regarding C Arm X Ray

By Robert Stone

Radiology is a subspecialty in the field of medicine that is concerned with the use of imaging technologies to detect and diagnose medical conditions in the body. Medical professionals who specialize in this field are referred to as radiologists. Some of the techniques that radiologists use to do their work include Pistron Emission Tomography (PET), ultrasound, x-ray, CT scan, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These techniques are performed used different pieces of equipment among them being the c arm. Here are facts regarding C arm x ray.

A c arm machine is based on x-ray technology. It is used in minimally invasive surgery and in diagnostic imaging. The system is used in visualizing several body processes, including cardiac surgery, gastroenterology, and thoracic/abdominal aortic aneurysm repair. Other procedures it finds use in include percutaneous replacements, neuro simulation, neurology procedures, orthopedics and vascular surgery among others.

Many companies manufacture these devices around the world and in the United States. Some manufacturers of the products in United States are Siemens, GE Healthcare/OEC, Ziehm and Philips. Some notable manufacturers outside United States are Hitachi, Shimadzu, Hologic and Orthoscan. The United States manufacturers are also leaders in the global market and also leaders in specific parts of the globe such as Europe.

A lot of advancement in technology has been going on in the medical imaging field. Some of the components used in older medical units have been substituted with new and better technology. For example, new systems today have 3-D navigation aids and a much better image processing software. These improvements have resulted in a huge increase in the quality of images produced.

Patients now get exposed to lower doses of radiation due to technological advancement. High doses of x-ray radiation can be very dangerous to the human body. The same risk occurs when duration of exposure is prolonged. Cancer is one of the many bad effects caused by overexposure to radiation. Therefore, safety is only ensured by minimizing number and duration of exposure to the radiation.

Image intensifiers used to dominate in old models of c arms. However, that changed with the introduction of flat-panel systems. Flat-panel systems are much better because they offer much better image quality. They also allow for the design of smaller systems that take much less physical space in the operating room. The field of view is also larger in flat-panel systems as compared to image intensifiers.

Ziehm Imaging is credited with inventing flat-panel systems when it released its Vision FD flat-panel mobile c arm. Philips would later in 2009 follow suit by releasing its Veradius system. At the moment, most manufacturers of these systems use flat-panel technology. The many advantages that are associated with flat-panel technology make it important to have in an operating room.

C arms exist in different configurations and sizes. Some are designed to be mobile while others are installed permanently in the OR. To increase accessibility, help reduce cost, and enhance mobility, several manufacturers have produced a variety of mini versions of the systems
