Why Indoor Air Quality Testing Virginia Is So Important

By Amanda Phillips

Many people go to extra lengths to ensure the safety of their home. This may include installing an alarm system, smoke detectors, and other safety measures. Unfortunately, many people do not think about air quality when they think of things that can harm their home. But the possibility of air contamination is all too real. That is why you should schedule an indoor air quality testing Virginia to see if there is an issue.

One of the biggest threats is mold. You can see many mold spores when they spread on a wall or carpet, but unfortunately, they were probably there well before you saw them, and could be wreaking havoc on the structural integrity of your home. Also, mold consists of tiny, airborne spores that you cannot usually see with the naked eye.

The health problems from ignoring or not being aware of a mold issue is that you can all kinds of respiratory problems. You can develop allergies you never had before, start wheezing, get rashes on your body and even have burning, red or watery eyes.

A good inspector will look for visual proof of spores, but will also take an air sample and run it through testing. This testing sees how many spore particles there are, and sees if it is below or above the limit that the state of Virginia allows. If it is above, you must schedule removal as soon as possible to avoid illness or home damage.

Asbestos is another common infestation that could be in your house without you knowing it. Just like moldy homes, it can cause all kinds of lung issues such as coughing and wheezing that can be painful and chronic if the asbestos go airborne. Though it is mostly older buildings or homes that have it, you should get tested either way, as long as the inspectors are there to test for other contamination as well.

You may have heard of warnings about lead in paint. Most manufacturers stopped adding lead to paint years ago, but if you have any rooms in your house that have old paint, it is entirely possible that there is lead in the formula. Some people scrape off the old paint themselves and then put a new coat of a modern color over it. However, you should really hire a professional as they have the equipment to clean the area and make sure they do not breathe in any of the lead, equipment that you likely do not have on hand to do it yourself.

Most people when they think of things that can affect your lungs in your home, they likely don't think of radon. But this is a real threat, as it can cause bloody coughs, shortness of breath and even pneumonia, which can easily turn fatal if you do not treat it as soon as possible.

The same company that does the testing can often do removal of the offending particles if need be. If not, they can certainly refer you to someone who can. Just make sure they do a second round of testing after treatment to give your home a clean bill of air health.
